LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): Except for the provincial capital and Greshk district, residents of all other areas in southern Helmand province approach Talibaninfo-icon militants to resolve their legal and other issues, an official said Wednesday.

Mohammad Sadiq Farahi, head of the Helmand appellate court, addressing an accountability meeting here, said people approached the kangaroo courts in the absence of government justice and judicial facilities.

He said Helmand has 13 organizational units but judicial offices were only available in Lashkargah, the provincial capital, and Greshk district.

“The government’s writ is not felt in other areas due to security problems, civil services are also suspended there,” he said.

Farahi said people referred their cases to Taliban in areas where the government had no control. He added they could reactivate their branches in all districts of the province if security was ensured.

About corruption in judicial organs, he said, four officials of his department involved in corruption had been introduced to judiciary organs.

A tribal elder, Abdul Rahim Khan, who attended the meeting, said judiciary organs should provide transparent services to people in order to win their trust.

He said those involved in corruption should be awarded severe punishment to set an example for others.

Governor’s spokesman, Omar Zwak, told Pajhwok security would be ensured soon in a number of areas of Helmand on the back of clearing operations planned for near future.

Residents of a number of other provinces of the country also refer their cases to Taliban courts.
