Don’t drag neighbors into peace bid, Ghani tells Taliban

Oct 07, 2017 - 19:38

KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani on Saturday said the Talibaninfo-icon should forget they could defeat the Afghan forces and should reconcile with the government as the only option with them.

The president said this while addressing a ceremony about the handing over of two US-made UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters to the Afghan Air Force at the airport in southern Kandahar province.

Earlier, the president arrived to a warm welcome in Kandahar City, the provincial capital, where provincial authorities and military personnel received him.

The president termed the delivery of the Black Hawk helicopters to the Afghan forces “an important milestone” and said now the Taliban should forget about beating the Afghan forces.

“Militants have one option, they should reconcile. We don’t want bloodshed, we defend ourselves. The only way to end the conflict is political reconciliation,” Ghani believed.

He went on saying the Taliban should choose the path of national reconciliation and should forget they would defeat Afghan forces or weaken them.

US and NATOinfo-icon forces commander Gen. Nicholson also addressed the ceremony and said after the announcement of President Donald Trump new strategy on Afghanistaninfo-icon, the Taliban had weakened.

He said the ongoing counter-terrorism efforts in Afghanistan were vital for international peace. “This year, Afghan forces conducted 1,500 counter-terrorism operations and this number would surge in future. Afghan forces are more equipped technically”, he said.

The US plans to supply a total of 159 Black Hawks to Afghanistan in the coming years as it boosts the capacity of the Afghan air force.
