PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): The Afghanistaninfo-icon-Pakistaninfo-icon Joint Economic Commission (JEC) will meet in Kabulinfo-icon in September on ways of bolstering bilateral cooperation between the neighbours.

Ambassador Dr. Omar Zakhilwal and Pakistan’s Finance Minister Ishaq Dar agreed on Wednesday to resume high-level trade talks at a meeting in Islamabad on Wednesday.

Issues of mutual interest, including the current state of Pakistan-Afghanistan bilateral relations, especially economic cooperation, were discussed at the ice-breaking meeting.

Since November 2015 when President Ashraf Ghani insisted on the involvement of India in such talks, it will be the first JEC session -- after a 22 months delay.

Robust economic would not only benefit the two countries, but also strengthen regional trade, Dar believed, affirming Pakistan’s desire for peace and economic progress in Afghanistan.

Zakhilwal proposed the JEC be held in Kabul in September -- an idea welcomed by the finance minister. Mutually convenient dates for the session will be firmed up soon, according to an official statement.

The JEC meeting will present an opportunity to discuss measures for enhanced economic cooperation between the two countries. Pakistan’s Economic Affairs Division and the Embassy of Afghanistan will work together on finalising arrangements.

An important forum for discussions on issues like trade facilitation, bilateral and transit trade, highway and railway projects and scholarships for Afghan students, the last JEC session took place on Nov 23, 2015 in Islamabad.
