Agriculture projects worth 41m afs launched in Paktia

GARDEZ (Pajhwok): The Agricultureinfo-icon Livestock’s and irrigation Department in southeastern Paktika province has launched work on 41 million afghanis orchard, vegetable and poultry projects, an official said on Tuesday.

Agriculture Director Walid Ahmad Tasal told Pajhwok Afghan News the production of poultry and its distribution to womeninfo-icon for farming was the biggest project accounting for 36 million afghanis.

He said chickens would be distributed to 500 poor families for farming in Ahmadabad district and Gardez, the provincial capital. Each family will get 30 hens with seed for a year and other facilities needed for their protection.

Successful families would receive more hens next year, according to Tasal, who said 5.5 million afs would be spent on the irrigation project. Farmers will be provided with instruments.

He said the growers would be provided with modern equipment. Women farmer will get free equipment to help them grow vegetable and manufacture sauces and jams. In addition, markets will be explored for their products.

Governor Shamim Khan Katawazi stressed the need for more cooperation with farmers and development of the agriculture sector. He hoped that agriculture, poultry and vegetable projects would help improve their situation and boost the provincial economy.

Abdul Jabbar, a farmer speaking on behalf of others, said the creation of a proper irrigation system, exploration of market for agricultural produce, cold storage, green stores and modern equipment were needed to boost the sector.

Paktia province produces thousand of tonnes to dried and fresh fruits but lack of access to the international market has been a huge issue.
