Kabul elevator for the disabled remains unused

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): A lift made three years ago for the disabled people in the Department of Labour and Social Affairs remains unused and has started to get damaged, a member of the Meshrano Jirgainfo-icon claimed on Tuesday.

Nisar Ahmad Haris, head of the Senate Public Welfare Commission, told Pajhwok Afghan News the issue raised by officials of the department in a meeting with the panel’s members on Monday.

According to him, three years ago, a special elevator was installed in the building of the department in the Old Macro Ryan area in the 16th police district. The lift, which was operated only on the day of inauguration, had since been abandoned, he said.

Haris linked the situation to weak management and corruption in the administration, demanding the authorities concerned should be held accountable.

But Abdul Fatah Ashrat Ahmadzai, spokesman for the relevant ministry, denied the lift was damaged after its inauguration day. The disabled used the vertical transport facility to move between the first and third floors of the building, he insisted.

But for a few months, it has not been used because of technical problems, explained Ahmadzai, who promised the device would be repaired soon.
