KHOST CITY (Pajhwok): Date expired and low quality medicines, food products and alcoholic beverages weighing four tons were set alight at an official event in southeastern Khost province on Thursday.

Governor Hakam Khan Habibi, who attended the event, told Pajhwok Afghan News the expired medicines and food products had been confiscated from markets in the provincial capital, Khost City.

He said the campaign against such products would continue and the public healthinfo-icon department had been asked to prevent selling expired drugs and food items in the bazaar.

“Two tons of expired and low quality food items, two tons of expired drugs and 900 liters of alcoholic beverages were torched today,” Habibi said.

The governor said they were planning to gradually close all healthcare centers that lacked legal licenses. He also called on shopkeepers and investors to avoid selling expired and low quality drugs and food items.

Provincial public health director Dr. Habib Shah Ansari said the campaign would be extended to districts to destroy expired and low quality drugs and foods.

“This problem exists countrywide, but we are trying to prevent selling and purchasing of such items in the market,” he said.

Ahmad Wali, a resident, said collecting expired drugs and food items could not resolve the issue, suggesting heavy fines and punishment for shopkeepers keeping such items.

He said store owners used to remove low quality items until public health supervision teams were in the area.
