Afghan war a generational struggle: Petraeus

Afghan war a generational struggle: Petraeus

Jun 17, 2017 - 15:18

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Trump administration’s plan to deploy more troops to Afghanistaninfo-icon is a positive and encouraging move, says a former CIA director.

David Petraeus, who also served as commander of US and coalition forces in Afghanistan, underlined sustained commitment to the mission.

Speaking to an American broadcaster, the ex-general said the US needed to stay in Afghanistan to achieve the key objective behind the invasion of Afghanistan.

“We need to recognise that we went there for a reason and we stayed for a reason, to ensure that Afghanistan is not once again a sanctuary for al-Qaida or other transnational extremists...

“We also have a very useful platform there for the regional counterterrorist effort. And, of course, we have greatly reduced the capabilities of al-Qaida’s senior leaders in that region,” he claimed.

He characterised the war as a generational struggle, which could not be won in a few years. The US and its allies needed to be in Afghanistan for the long haul and in a sustainable way, he said.

Petraeus also called for softening restrictions on the use of airpower to support Afghan partners, who he said were ready to die for their country against al-Qaida and other insurgents.

Afghan Talibaninfo-icon and Haqqani networkinfo-icon leaders were in sanctuaries inside Pakistaninfo-icon, the then commander alleged, saying that was why targeting them was not easy.

He suggested a regional effort to get Pakistan to do more to deny sanctuary to those elements that were making life so difficult for Afghans and their government.
