8 journalists killed, 20 injured in a month: group

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): A media and journalists’ advocacy federation, expressing concern over increasing threats journalists and media outlets face in Afghanistaninfo-icon, on Wednesday asked the government to be more serious in supporting the community.

Rahimullah Samandar, a member of the Federation of Afghanistan's Media Organisations and Journalists, told a press conference here that eight journalists had been killed in two terrorist incidents in Kabul and Jalalabad, capital of eastern Nangarhar, and more than 20 others had been injured during the past one month alone.

In addition, he said, a number of media offices, including the Radio Television Afghanistan (RTA) in Nangarhar, and Yak and Mashal Televisions, and Mandagar Daily, had suffered many losses in the two attacks, but so far they not been assisting in reviving their offices.

Sidiqullah Tawhidi, another member of the federation, read out a list of demands of the federation, asking the government to improve journalists’ work situation and develop media outlets.

“We want the government to seriously pay attention to ensuring the safety of media workers and guarantee their security.”

On May 17, a number of suicide bombers stormed RTA’s office in Jalalabad, Nangarhar’s capital, in which four media workers were killed.

On May 31, a massive truck bombing in Zanbaq Square of Kabul killed at least 150 individuals, including a Press TV cameraman, an IT worker of Tolo, a BCC driver, and a technical worker of RTA.

Tawhidi said the federation wanted the government to take immediate steps for reconstructioninfo-icon of the media outlets’ offices which had suffered damages in recent attacks and provide more support to those wounded in the attacks.
