Khost teachers go on strike over land plots

Khost teachers go on strike over land plots

May 06, 2017 - 17:03

KHOST CITY (Pajhwok): Teachers have closed 219 schools in southeastern Khost province in protest against what they say the government’s failure to distribute them land plots.

The schools have been shut in Khost City, the capital of southeastern Khost province, and four districts.

Numbering around 3,449, the teachers accuse the government of being unable to facilitate them.

Raees Hassan, one of the striking teachers, told Pajhwok Afghan New that teachers from Babak, Sabari, Yaqubi, Tirazai, Zazi Maidan and Khost City had gone on strike.

He said former president Hamid Karzai through a presidential decree in 2008 had ordered the Ministry of Educationinfo-icon to distribute one plot to each deserving teacher.

“In the past one decade since then, the government has been unable to materlaize the scheme of providing land plots to teachers. We tried our best to reach our voice to government officials, but nobody heard our problem,” he said.

Lal Gul, a teacher from Zazi Maidan, said the boycott would continue until their demand was met.

“Our schools will remain shut and students would be on vacation until the government hears our voice,” he added.

Mohammad Akbar Tani, a local education official, said they had tried to get plots for teachers but central authorities turned down their request.

He said they had done the job on their part and it was the central government to take further steps.

Governor’s spokesman Mubarez Zadran said many problems in plots distribution to teachers had been resolved and the process would be launched soon.

He said the authorities concerned needed more time before authorizing the provincial governments to distribute plots to teachers.
