Hekmatyar may appear in Jalalabad on Monday
KABUL (Pajhwok): The supreme leader of Hezb-i-Islami Afghanistan, Gulbadin Hekmatyar, is expected to appear in public in the capital of eastern Nangarhar province on Monday, a reliable source said on Friday.
Security guards of the former prime minister and warlord have arrived in Jalalabad to keep security for Hekmatyar, who signed a landmark peace agreement with President Ashraf Ghani in September last year.
A reliable source told Pajhwok Afghan News that Hekmatyar was due to arrive in Jalalabad on Monday. The HIA leader would spend a few days in Jalalabad before leaving for Kabul.
HIA spokesman Qarib Rahman Saeed tod Pajhwok Afghan News that Hekmatyar would come next week, but gave no exact date.
Before Hekmatyar’s return to Afghanistan, the first group of his party’s prisoners is likely to be set free by the government from the jail in Bagram district of central Parwan province on Saturday or Sunday.
Meanwhile, HIA media team member Ghani Haqmal told Pajhwok Afghan News the matter of HIA prisoners’ release had been finalized and the first group would be either released on Saturday or Sunday.
He said about 68 HIA prisoners would be released from the Bagram and Pul-i-Charkhi prisons.
He said they had made arrangements for the reception of HIA leader Hekmatyar who would appear soon in public.
A government official confirmed the expected arrival of Hekmatyar in the first days of the next week.
