KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The first group of Hezb-i-Islamiinfo-icon Afghanistaninfo-icon (HIA) prisoners is set to be released soon from the Bagram prison as their bail process has been finalized.

A few months back, the Gulbadin Hekmatyar-led HIA and the Afghan government signed a landmark peace deal.

Under the deal, the government has to release HIA prisoners and a joint commission of the HIA and the government has launched efforts in this regard.

HIA spokesman Qarib Rahman Saeed told Pajhwok Afghan News the joint delegation visited some 39 prisoners at the Bagram Jail in central Parwan province. They are set to be released in near future, he said.

He said the delegation was warmly welcomed at the jail and it members talked to the prisoners in a detailed manner.

The delegation told the prisoners: “May God accept your sacrifice and struggle. And all the credit for this peace deal goes to you. After you are released, you should work for peace and stability in your areas.”

According to him, the prisoners guaranteed their obedience to the peace deal on the HIA’s official page.

Earlier, about 29 prisoners in the Pul-i-Charkhi Prison had also given written guarantee.

Saeed said tribal elders and HIA party had signed the guarantee letters. A presidential decree will be issued for the prisoners’ release.

The HIA spokesman hoped the first group of prisoners would be released in “a very near future.”

On the other hand, the High Peace Councilinfo-icon (HPC)’s secretariat head, Dr. Akram Khpalwak, said the peace process between the HIA and the government had been progressing in a good way.

He told a gathering of the HPC executive council on Wednesday that the HIA’s first group of prisoners would be released in near future. “Needed measures have been taken for welcoming Hekmatyar.”

The peace deal implementation commission’s spokesman, Ahmad Farzan, said all initial works for the release of the HIA prisoners had been completed.

He said before their release the prisoners should sign and accept three types of guarantee letters and commitments.

He said, firstly the prisoner himself should guarantee he would support the peace deal and wouldn’t violate it or return to the fighting.

The second bail is provided by the HIA and the third by the prisoners’ relevant tribal elders.

Farzan said a few days back the HIA delegation met prisoners at Pul-i-Charkhi Prison and the captives guaranteed acceptance of the rules.
