Anti-poppy drive goes on hitch-free in Kunar

ASADBAD (Pajhwok): A poppy eradication campaign has been launched to destroy the illicit plant on a 400 hectors of land in eastern Kunar province, local officials said on Wednesday.

Kunar counternarcotics department official Mohammad Arif Safi told Pajhwok Afghan News the campaign was launched in cooperation with security forces.

He said this year’s plan was destroy the poppy crop on 400 hectors of land in Kunar province.

Kunar police chief Brig. Gen. Juma Gul Himmat said police were cooperating with the campaigners in compliance with directives from the Presidential Palace and the Ministry of Interior.

He said the anti-poppy drive was launched yesterday from Shegal district where dozens of acres of land was cleared of the crop in a number of villages.

The police chief said tight security measures had been adopted for the campaign and the campaigners had so far faced no resistance. The drive was being supported by tribal elders, religious scholars and the youth, the police chief said.

Gul Wali, a poppy grower, said the government should provide them improved quality seeds and chemical fertilizer in order they switch to legal crops.

He said they grew poppy to fight against poverty beaus other crops had little income.
