951 ‘crime suspects’ detained in Nangarhar last year

Apr 13, 2017 - 20:45

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): As many as 951 individuals have been detained over various crimes last year in eastern Nangarhar province, officials said on Thursday.

Nangarhar provincial police spokesman, Hazrat Hussain Mashriqiwal, told Pajhwok Afghan News 596 criminal cases were registered last year at the police headquarters.

The charges against the detainees ranged from drug smuggling to kidnapping, armed robberies, armed activities and others.

According to Mashriqiwal, some 951 suspects have been detained and most of them referred to the attorneys in connection with the 596 cases. He praised efforts of what he said well-trained and equiped police at curbing crimes.

Nangarhar provincial council member, Obaidullah Shinwari, criticized the government for always claiming achievements amid increasing crimes.

He said the judiciary should support police and punish the detainees, otherwise crimes would increase further.

Nangarhar residents said strongmen still committed crimes with impunity as security forces lacked courage to arrest them.

A resident of Jalalabad city, Gul Agha, said all the individuals police had arrested were ordinary people and hadn’t committed serious crimes.
