Protestors block Kabul-North highway for hours

Apr 12, 2017 - 22:02

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Protestors on Wednesday blocked the Kabul-North highway during a demonstration to demand arrest and punishment of a former Public Order Police commander, Zamarai Paikan, accused of killing many people.

The protestors, coming all the way from Mir Bacha Kot district of Kabul province, accused Paikan of killing Yardil Nizami and his four relatives.

The serial killer remained at large despite President Ashraf Ghani ordered his arrst last year, said the protestors who kept the busy highway blocked for several hours.

Farid Nizami, a brother of the slain Yardil Nizami, said Zamarai Paikan brutally killed a number of people after Friday prayers in 1391 solar yearinfo-icon.

After complaints from people continued, President Ghani last year ordered detention of Paikan, he said.

Despite the presidential orders about a year ago, the Ministry of Interior (MoI) could not arrest Paikan, he said, urging the president and the chief executive officer (CEO) to take notice of the case.

Asking the MoI to take urgent action about the arrest of the accused, Nizami warned they would continue blocking the Kabul-North highway that connects 13 provinces with Kabul if their demand was not responded positively.

A representative of the protestors told Pajhwok Afghan News the highway was reopened after Kabul Garrison Headquarter invited them to resolve their problem.

Zamarai Paikan was suspended as public order police commander for Mirbacha Kot district last year.

Residents of Mirbacha Kot and Kohdaman districts in the past had also blocked the Kabul-North highway in protest over the killing of Yardil Nizami.
