Amid air-tight security, flag-hoisting ceremony held

MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): A traditional flag-hoisting ceremony marking the Afghan New Year was held in Mazar-i-Sharif, the capital of northern Balkh province, on Tuesday.

Tens of thousands of people, including national and international dignitaries, attended the ceremony at the Hazrat Ali (RA) mausoleum in the city amidst stringent security.

The flag-hoisting, called Janda Bala ceremony in the local parlance, took place at 10.15am after a six-gun salute. Second Vice-President Mohammad Sarwar Danish was among the participants.

Balkh Governor Atta Mohammad Noor, top Afghan and NATOinfo-icon commanders, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Iqbal Zafar Jhagra and diplomats from neighbouring countries were also in attendance.

Noor read out a Nawroz message from President Ashraf Ghani. The governor presented a long report on a decade of efforts for the reconstructioninfo-icon of the province.

VP Danish, referring to ongoing talks with the Hezb-i-Islamiinfo-icon Afghanistaninfo-icon (HIA), said the government respected endeavours for intra-Afghan reconciliation. He asked the rebels to choose peace over war.
