Nangarhar: 2.8m trees to be planted this spring

Nangarhar: 2.8m trees to be planted this spring

Jan 16, 2017 - 17:26

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Officials say 2.8 million seedlings will be planted as part of the spring tree plantation drive in eastern Nangarhar province.

Agricultureinfo-icon director Rafiullah Rahimzai told Pajhwok Afghan News on Monday that his department alone had prepared in its nurses 450,000 seedlings this year.

He said the seedlings including fruit bearing and non-bearing and ornamental plants would be sown at government departments and at public places.

He said a total of 2.8 million trees would be planted with the help of the private sector. He said his department would plant a part of the seedlings and would hand over the rest to other departments.

But some residents of Jalalabad, the provincial capital, though praised the tree plantation campaign, complained about the lack of will to preserve trees once planted.

They said millions of trees were planted each year in Nangarhar but the seedlings were never paid attention.

However, the agriculture director said they had constituted a joint committee representing the municipality, the canalization department, the information and culture, educationinfo-icon, hajjinfo-icon and auqaf departments to preserve the plants.
