Dec 27, 2015 - 19:58

SHARAN (Pajhwok): This capital cityof southern Paktika province would be lit up by a diesel-powered generator in the near future, local officials said on Sunday.

Deputy Governor Attaullah Fazli told Pajhwok Afghan News the problems previously faced in supplying electricity to Sharan had finally been resolved.

He said a professional engineer had been employed as head of the provincial electricity department. He would better manage the power supply campaign.

“Government officials have promised bringing a number of power generators to Sharan,” he said, adding the generators would supply power to the city after the requisite steps were taken.

He said the extension of electricity from Kabulinfo-icon to southern Ghazni province would also help Paktika province overcome its problems.

Residents said they relied on private power generators, which could not resolve their problems.

Mohammadullah Himatyar, a civil societyinfo-icon activist, called lack of electricity in Sharan a big problem. Reliance on private generators was a costly proposition, he argued.

“We are in need of electricity. No government offices and locals have access to power. We ask the government to find a permanent solution to the shortage of electricity,” he added.

Haji Niaz Mohammad, a resident of Sharan, said his business would see a boost and the government would collect more revenue if the electricity problem was addressed.

He expressed happiness over the supply of electricity to Sharan and asked relevant officials to bring more development to the area.Paktika is the only province that has no electricity facility in its capital.
